 The Voter
 November 2024

President’s Message

What's YOUR Legacy?
When asked about her legacy on her 77th birthday, Rosa Parks commented "I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity for all people.”  As I look back on my short time with the League, I have hundreds of memories of members who have been concerned about freedom, equality and justice for all people and it has shown in the work they have done. In 2024, we had three elections, and, in each election, our members worked to register voters, create awareness of candidate and ballot initiatives, and increase voter turnout. Our members also served as poll watchers, poll workers, and election protection and canvassing board monitors. All of this to ensure free and fair elections for ALL people. It’s been a long and busy year and each of you have my gratitude as chapter President but also as a Floridian.

Regardless of the election results, we will soon pivot to reestablishing our committees to do the work outlined in our Local Program, prepare for Legislative Delegation meetings, and ready ourselves for the 2025 legislative session.
I hope each of you will take a collective deep breath after November 5th and then join us in the work that requires our continued focus. For the League, it is never about the outcome of an election but about the ongoing work to create a more perfect democracy throughout the year and leave a legacy of our own.

With my deepest gratitude and admiration,
Lanelle Phillmon
President, LWVJFC

The project also studies and advocates for housing policies that have been successfully implemented in other communities to address this critical issue.

Dr. Jaffee has been a member of the UNF community since 2000 and held the positions of Director of the Office of Faculty Enhancement (faculty development center), Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Assistant Vice President of Undergraduate Studies. December First Wednesday Speaker Series
Join the League of Women Voters Jacksonville First Coast virtually on Wednesday, December 4th at 11:30 am to learn more about the Electoral College and the National Popular Vote.Rosemary Heilemann is a retired teacher who has been a member of the League of Women Voters for 45 years in Illinois. She serves on the board of her local League, LWV Deerfield/Lincolnshire, and is active in other levels of League, including the Lake County League and the Illinois League’s state committees. She has also served in off-board roles for the LWV Lake Michigan Region ILO and the LWV Upper Mississippi River Region ILO. She has been a moderator for candidate forums throughout the area, has chaired studies, and acts as Zoom host for meetings and webinars.
In 2017, she co-founded a League committee whose goal is to educate the public about why we should abolish the electoral college by Constitutional amendment. This LWVDL Electoral College Committee has continued to give presentations since 2017 and includes members from local Leagues around Illinois as well as from numerous other states. Since June, 2022, when LWVUS identified the abolition of the electoral college by Constitutional amendment as a “next big goal,” this committee has been working with LWVUS as a resource for that national campaign.
