Join us on February 5th at Seasons 52, 5096 Big Island Drive, for First Wednesday Lunch with the League with guest speaker April Slade, who will speak with us about Civics in public education, the curriculum that is offered and how it prepares students for their role as civically aware citizens.
April D. Slade is a trailblazer and a fighter for justice and equality for all. A native of Tifton, GA, her parents are Robert and Barbara Collins. She has 20 years of experience as an educator, she has been a middle and high school history teacher in Georgia, the island of Guam, and Florida, a social studies curriculum specialist, a Region Assistant Principal and is currently Director of K12 Social Studies for Duval County Public Schools where she is responsible for increasing the awareness of Social Studies education. She has hosted a Male Empowerment Summit and Stop the Violence Rally, volunteered with Rev. Al Sharpton, and been a voice as a guest speaker at many protests calling out acts of injustice.
April is a 1998 graduate of Tift County High School. She received her B.A. in History from Fort Valley State University, Master of Education in Instructional Technology from American Intercontinental University, and currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Marymount University.
She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and journal writing. April is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is married to CMDCM Carlos T. Slade, active-duty Navy and they have three kids (Cayden, Zackery, Brooke). They reside in Jacksonville, Florida.
Her inspirational motto is “Never allow your circumstances to dictate your outcome. Success comes in many forms and the foundation is education.”
Doors open at 11:20 am and the event begins promptly at 11:30 am. Please plan to arrive early to allow time to speak with other members, our board members, and the guest speaker.
The menu includes a small Field Greens Salad, choice of entree (Chicken Caprese Sandwich, Avocado Toast, or Mahi Tacos), a Mini Indulgence Dessert and beverage (Coffee, Iced Tea, or Soft Drink), at a cost per person of $35.00 for members and their guests. Non-members who purchase tickets will pay a nominal convenience fee when purchasing tickets.
Tickets are available using the Register Now Button. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend. Members please "Log In" to pay the $35.00 member fee. You will be asked to prepay with a credit card and select a sandwich choice at registration. Tickets are non-refundable.
